Case studies

Anonymized examples from a working plant.

Over one September at a Midwest steel plant, four injuries came through Hue. One needed the ER, two went home with care instructions, and one finished the shift. All four were seen at the plant’s on-site clinic the next day.

Case Study 1

Situation

An employee was found injured on the plant floor during the night shift.

What happened

The call reached a clinician right away. The clinician directed the response, and the worker went to the ER. During the visit, the physician spoke directly with the attending ER physician.

Outcome

The worker was treated and discharged that night. The next morning, the worker received a personal text from a physician and was given a physician’s direct cell number, with instructions to call anytime. Follow-up at the on-site clinic was that same day.

Case Study 2

Situation

An employee sustained a hand injury during the evening shift.

What happened

The plant’s first responder reached a clinician, who gave treatment instructions within about 10 minutes. The hand was wrapped and iced. The worker went home with no ER trip and received care instructions from a physician by text.

Outcome

The worker was seen at the on-site clinic the next day and returned to work with a light lifting restriction.

Every case gets a clinician review within 24 hours and is discussed at the monthly Audit & Review with the plant’s responders and safety lead. The question is what could we have done differently for a better result. Reviews are recorded so every shift can learn from them.
